Osteopathy is a system of medicine that focuses on the diagnosis & hands-on treatment of joints, muscles, ligaments and tendons of the whole body (the musculo-skeletal system).
Osteopathic treatment is tailored to the individual. Hundreds of different techniques may be used, depending on the condition and the patient being treated. There are two main categories of technique; “structural” techniques, which may involve manipulation of the body tissues to restore mobility & “cranial” techniques, which are more gentle and useful for more deep seated problems.
Osteopaths study for a minimum of four years to gain their Degree. Osteopathy is regulated in the same way as medicine. It is illegal to call yourself an osteopath unless you are registered with the General Osteopathic Council.
Sometimes you may need a combination of both types to get the best results. We will discuss this with you at your first consultation. If you have any concerns about your treatment you should let your osteopath know.
Osteopathic treatment is safe & effective. Getting a prompt consultation for low back problems can reduce pain and increase mobility. It has been shown that either manipulation, acupuncture or exercise are the most effective treatments. We will also give you advice on how to manage your problem and sometimes exercises to prevent future episodes.
Osteopaths don’t just treat back pain. We can treat a wide range of conditions, including neck and limb pain, tennis elbow, frozen shoulder, carpel tunnel syndrome, sinusitis, sports injuries, headaches, arthritic pain and much more. Treatment is safe and suitable for all ages, from newborn babies to the elderly.
You do not need a referral from your GP. Osteopaths are trained to diagnose & treat mechanical conditions mainly affecting the musculo-skeletal system. We know when to treat & when to refer for tests such as X-rays and blood tests.
Luckily most people don’t need further testing. We can normally tell all we need to know from a thorough case history & physical examination.
